Newcastle United are interested in trying to sign Kalvin Phillips on loan this summer, as Eddie Howe looks to bolster his squad on Tyneside.

The Magpies will be competing in the UEFA Champions League next season after finishing fourth in the Premier League, and as a result, are looking to strengthen their squad ahead of the new campaign.

Newcastle United hold a long-standing interest in Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips, who made just fours starts for the Sky Blues during his debut season at the Etihad Stadium last year.

The 27 year-old featured in only 12 Premier League matches under Pep Guardiola, as injury and fitness problems plagued the Englishman’s campaign in East Manchester following a £42 million move from Leeds United.

Phillips missed two months of the campaign early into the season, sidelined due to a shoulder injury suffered last September.

The England midfielder featured in Manchester City’s final three Premier League matches of the season and despite signing a six-year deal last summer, has been linked with a potential exit from the Etihad Stadium.

Newcastle United, Aston Villa and West Ham have all been mooted, with the Hammers eying a replacement for club captain Declan Rice, who is set to sign for Arsenal in a huge £105 million transfer.

The Telegraph report that Phillips is one of two Premier League stars Newcastle are considering trying to sign on loan, as the Magpies struggle to remain within their summer budget after the signing of Sandro Tonali for £52 million.

Both Phillips and Chelsea’s Connor Gallagher are claimed to be of interest to the Magpies, although the Manchester City midfielder recently reaffirmed his willingness to remain with the treble-winners for the new season.

City Xtra exclusively revealed earlier this week that Phillips is poised to remain at the Etihad Stadium next season, and that the club expect him to stay to fight for a spot under Pep Guardiola.

Phillips made 21 appearances across all competitions last season, winning 18 games and making his European debut against Sevilla.
