“Beyond my expectations” – Pep Guardiola praises Manchester City teen Rico Lewis amid new contract talks

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has once again praised the recent performances of Rico Lewis, who is reportedly set to be rewarded with a new contract.

The 18 year-old, who made his full Premier League debut against Leeds United at Elland Road late last month, started ahead of both Kyle Walker and Joao Cancelo against Everton on Saturday.

Lewis has become a breakthrough talent so far this season for Manchester City, scoring in the UEFA Champions League and starting against both Liverpool and Chelsea in the Carabao Cup.

The full-backs performances are now set to be rewarded with a new contract, with Jack Gaughan reporting that the improved terms would see the teenager earn a significant uplift on his current wages.

City manager Pep Guardiola wouldn’t confirm the reports however once again praised Lewis’ recent performances.

“About the contract I’m not the person, it’s a decision of the club,” said the Catalan.

“What he’s done is beyond my expectations. Big games, everything is well done. He has the ability to read the situation every time in one fraction of a second.

“He never reacts after always anticipates. He’s such an intelligent player. We are delighted the academy produce another quality player and we hope he stays for a long long time.”

City begin the new year against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Thursday, with the West London club also facing the Sky Blues on Sunday in the Emirates FA Cup.

Lewis has made nine appearances for the City first-team so far this season and can be expected to feature at least once over the course of the next two fixtures.
