Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero has made a staggering claim around the abilities of Phil Foden, making comparisons with two of the club’s greatest ever midfielders.

The England international midfielder is enjoying his best personal campaign to date in front of goal, having been entrusted by Pep Guardiola to take up the attacking midfield role and largely during times of absence for Kevin De Bruyne.

The recently-crowned Football Writers’ Association Men’s Football of the Year has scored 24 goals and provided a further 11 assists in his 49 appearances across all competitions for Manchester City so far this season.

One man who has long been a keen admirer of the enormous potential and rising talents of Phil Foden has been the Manchester City midfielder’s former teammate Sergio Aguero, who left the club in 2021.

Speaking during a conversation with The Club this week, Aguero was asked to partake in a game of ‘start one, bench one, sell one’, with the selection of players put to the Argentine consisting of David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, and Phil Foden.

“Hard. I played with all three but it’s different players,” Aguero admitted. “(David) Silva has good quality. He did many assists but Kevin De Bruyne has assists and goals. But I prefer (Phil) Foden.”

Continuing in a moment of glowing praise for Manchester City’s prized Academy graduate, Aguero went on to say, “Because Foden is 23 and he has 50 Premier League goals and he’s not a striker – he’s a midfielder.

“I think I prefer Foden because he has good assists, goals and the control. The dribbling is so crazy. I always say to him. ‘Different gravy.’”

Sergio Aguero could yet make a return to the Etihad Stadium himself this season, with the understanding in some quarters being that the Argentine has received an invitation to be in attendance on the final day of the Premier League season.

That is all riding on the possibility that Manchester City will have the chance to win a fourth successive Premier League crown, with Arsenal hot on their tails and Pep Guardiola’s side needing to win all of their remaining three matches as things stand.

Fellow Manchester City legend David Silva made a return to his former club last weekend, watching on from the Etihad Stadium stands during the 5-1 win over Wolves and receiving a special lifetime seasoncard from chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak.
