Manchester City vice-captain Kevin De Bruyne has been nominated for the Premier League’s January Player of the Month award, it has been confirmed.

Following his return from injury at the start of January, the 32-year-old playmaker recorded two appearances in Premier League action for Manchester City, scoring one goal and providing two assists in the process.

Those goal contributions came in just 92 minutes of on-field action, equating to an average of a goal or an assist every 30.7 minutes for Pep Guardiola’s side at a pivotal point in the ongoing campaign.

De Bruyne’s stand-out moment came in the dramatic comeback victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park, when the Belgian came off the substitute’s bench to score a stunning equaliser before assisting Oscar Bobb for the team’s winning goal.

Antics in the north-east were then followed up by another assist as part of a more comfortable 3-1 win over Burnley at the Etihad Stadium following the Premier League’s winter break, providing a game-reading pass in-behind the Clarets defence for Julian Alvarez to score.

De Bruyne’s sensational return to English top-flight action following a five-month lay-off through injury has seen him recognised by the Premier League for their top award for the month of January and their first of 2024.

Premier League Player of the Month, January nominees:

  • Kevin De Bruyne, Manchester City
  • Elijah Adebayo, Luton Town
  • Conor Bradley, Liverpool
  • Diogo Jota, Liverpool
  • Gabriel Magalhães, Arsenal
  • Richarlison, Tottenham Hotspur

Despite his staggering list of accolades won under Manuel Pellegrini and Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, Kevin De Bruyne has never won the Premier League Player of the Month award but will certainly fancy his chances this time around.

On the subject of official Premier League awards, the Belgian international has been named in the division’s Team of the Year on five occasions, as well as being crowned Playmaker of the Season three times.

Kevin De Bruyne has also won the Premier League’s Player of the Season award twice, as well as the division’s Goal of the Month prize.
