Manchester City’s Julian Alvarez has put pen to paper on a brand new contract, with a one-year extension keeping him at the club until June 2028.

The 23 year-old has been at the Etihad Stadium less than a year, after officially completing his switch from Argentine giants River Plate last summer, joining the club in the same summer as the likes of Erling Haaland.

Manchester City completed the formalities of negotiations with River Plate during the winter transfer window of 2022, before the centre-forward – who can play anywhere across the forward line – remained at Estadio Monumental for the remainder of the campaign.

However, since making his switch to east Manchester official last summer, Alvarez has only gone from strength to strength, and heightened his development even further with a FIFA World Cup triumph at the Qatar edition of the tournament last winter with Argentina.

Now, after a whole host of clubs showed intrigue in Julian Alvarez’s situation at Manchester City amid the domination of Erling Haaland in the striker position, the Premier League champions have moved quickly to renegotiate terms with the Argentine international.

As confirmed by Manchester City today, Julian Alvarez has signed a new one-year contract extension to his existing deal, tying him down to the Etihad Stadium until at least June 2028.

It is also understood that as part of the renegotiated and improved terms, Alvarez has seen a significant upgrade to his pay package at Manchester City, taking his salary to the £100,000-a-week mark.

Speaking upon signing his new deal, Alvarez told Manchester City’s official club website: “This is a very proud moment for me and my family. For a club like City to put their faith in me like this is amazing.

“I have been really pleased with my first season here, but I have plenty more I can do. I know I can be better, and City offer me everything I need to fulfil my potential.

“I want to thank the manager, the coaches and everyone at City who works behind the scenes for everything they have done for me since I joined in the summer. I could not have asked for more. This is a club that looks after its players, and I have felt so supported throughout my time here.

“I am now focused on getting better and helping City win trophies.”

Manchester City’s sporting director Txiki Begiristain also offered his thoughts on the successful negotiations, as he explained: “He is the ideal blueprint for a young footballer and an inspiration to anyone looking to make their way in the game.

“He has shown already here in England he has outstanding movement and natural goalscoring instincts.

“We saw at the World Cup what a special talent he is. To win that trophy at his age is amazing and we are all very proud of what he achieved.

“His progress so far has been really good, but we are now fully focused on developing his game even further and turning him into one of the best strikers in world football.”

Julian Alvarez and his Manchester City teammates will now readjust their focus firmly on the season that remains, as Pep Guardiola and his squad eye a trio of silverware successes, with a Premier League title challenge well underway against Arsenal, a Champions League quarter-final on the horizon, and an FA Cup quarter-final clash against Burnley this weekend.
