Manchester City’s on-loan full-back Joao Cancelo is reportedly ‘quiet but frustrated’ by an ongoing situation surrounding his game time at Bayern Munich.

The 28 year-old left the Etihad Stadium is rather sudden and surprising circumstances during the most recent January transfer window, joining Bayern Munich on loan until the end of the ongoing season.

While the deal is officially a loan, the agreement also gives the Bundesliga club an option to buy the player on a permanent contract come the summer, for a fee set at €70 million.

However, for the time being, a new report would suggest that not everything is going to plan for the former Juventus and Inter Milan defender, who could now see his spot in Julian Nagelsmann’s starting line-up for the Champions League removed this week.

That is according to the information of Florian Plettenburg for Sky Germany, who reports that Joao Cancelo will be among Bayern Munich’s substitutes for their Champions League last-16 second-leg tie with PSG, at this stage.

It is further explained that Josip Stanišić will start ahead of the Manchester City loanee, with coaches at the Bundesliga giants viewing the Portugal international as a more typical right-back. However, Bayern Munich have been operating with a back-three over the last few weeks.

Plettenburg highlights that right now, Joao Cancelo stands no chance in competing against the likes of Alphonso Davies and Kingsley Coman for the attacking wide roles, and as such the player is described as being ‘quiet but frustrated’.

On the subject of Cancelo’s exit from Manchester City at the start of the calendar year, there was a feeling in some quarters that the move was a direct result of a disagreement and training ground confrontation between the Portuguese star and manager Pep Guardiola.

However, speaking during an interview in recent weeks, that notion was squashed by the player himself, as he explained, “It’s a lie that I had a fight with (Pep) Guardiola, a complete lie.

“I didn’t feel important to the team in recent games. I spoke to the coach and he agreed. I, the coach and club decided I had to leave, that it was the the best option for me.

Cancelo continued, “I like new opportunities and have nothing against Manchester City. I took the step to reach the level I wanted to. I became the player I am and I’m very grateful to Pep and the club. They gave everything to me and my family and I’ll never forget it.”
