“Now I understand” – Pep Guardiola reveals key reason behind Manchester City treble triumph
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has revealed the key reason for the club’s treble success last season.
The 53-year-old guided Manchester City to the Premier League, UEFA Champions League and Emirates FA Cup, becoming the first manager since Sir Alex Ferguson in 1999 to complete the historic achievement.
Guardiola also guided the Sky Blues to become World Champions in December, with the Manchester City manager having won 16 trophies during his time at the Etihad Stadium.
City, who are currently seeking to become the first team to win four successive Premier League titles, will also be eyeing reaching the Champions League Final and FA Cup Final again this season, with both matches set to be played at Wembley Stadium.
The Blues travel to Tottenham in the FA Cup fourth round next Friday, and are also scheduled to play FC Copenhagen in the last-16 of the Champions League next month.
Manchester City are currently on a warm-weather training camp in Abu Dhabi, as they prepare for the second-half of the campaign, and bid to overturn a two-point deficit at the top of the Premier League table.
The Cityzens have developed a formidable reputation during the second part of the campaign, and after enduring such success last season, culminating in a maiden Champions League, Guardiola has reflected on the key reason behind the achievement.
“Before I was much more impatient and anxious in everything, now I am calmer and in good times I am calmer,” he told DAZN, as relayed by Sport Witness.
“Before it seemed like the world was ending, experience teaches you that it is a game, that your opponent also plays and they are good, and that you can have a bad afternoon.
“There are simple things that I couldn’t tolerate before and now I understand that they do them wrong. The treble is the culmination of it all, but it wouldn’t have been possible without all the previous disappointments.
“If I am in my eighth season here it is because in bad times, they have also trusted me.”
Guardiola is contracted at Manchester City until 2025, with the club expected to be involved in the expanded 32-team FIFA Club World Cup in the United States that summer.
