Kalvin Phillips could be set for a January move to St James’ Park, as talks are held surrounding the Manchester City midfielder’s future.

Pep Guardiola has handed just two starts to the England international so far this season, with Phillips searching for regular minutes in an attempt to boost his hopes of being selected by Gareth Southgate for next summer’s European Championship.

The 28-year-old moved to the Etihad Stadium from Leeds United for £42 million in August 2022, and despite winning four trophies including the Premier League and UEFA Champions League, the midfielder is set for an exit from the club.

Phillips penned a six-year deal with Manchester City, but has made only two Premier League starts, with his debut coming against Chelsea last May.

The midfielder scored his first goal for the Blues during their 3-2 win in Belgrade last week, with Phillips netting from the penalty spot against Crvena zvezda.

The Englishman also made an appearance as a substitute in the FIFA Club World Cup semi-final victory over Urawa Red Diamonds on Tuesday evening in Jeddah.

Amid talk of an expected exit in January, Phillips could have made his last appearance for Manchester City, with Guardiola’s side having just three games remaining in the calendar year.

Journalist Ed Aarons reports that Newcastle are currently favourites to sign Phillips next month, with representatives of the player having held talks with Manchester City about finding the 28-year-old a new club.

Serie A side Juventus are also interested in signing the Englishman, with a number of other Premier League sides also claimed to be circling.

Phillips’ exit from the Etihad Stadium is further reported to most likely be on loan, with the potential for a full resolution of the player’s future next summer.

The 28-year-old chose against leaving Manchester City during the summer transfer window, despite over 15 European clubs having enquired about signing the midfielder.

A number of Premier League sides have been credited with interest in Phillips, including Manchester United, Tottenham and Liverpool.
