Manchester United could be snubbed by one of their primary transfer targets and players of interest, with Bernardo Silva working on a move for the talent to City.

Old Trafford officials are understood to be monitoring the development and progress of the 19-year-old midfielder, who has been shining over the last 12 months in particular for both club and country.

However, any move for the player is almost certain not to come cheaply, with Benfica not only having no intention to open talks in January, but also the player’s existing contract with the Portuguese giants being set at an eye-watering €120 million.

While Manchester United may be scouting the player, one report has also claimed that Manchester City want to sign the teenage midfielder, and his agent Jorge Mendes has a ‘plan’ to bring him to the Etihad Stadium in the summer of 2024.

That intent from both club and agent has now been partnered by comments from Bernardo Silva, after the Manchester City star has now stated that he will work personally to bring the player to the north-west of England to link-up with Pep Guardiola and co.

Speaking while away on international duty with Portugal alongside Benfica’s rising star, Bernardo Silva admitted this week, “If I can, I’ll make a move for João Neves to go to Man City instead of Man United, of course.”

Joao Neves is often likened to Bernardo Silva, and with a number of similar traits to match, Manchester City may have found their ideal replacement for the seasoned Portugal star, who has often been linked with a move away from the Etihad Stadium.

Writing on the traits of the rising Benfica star, one report states, “A footballer praised for his mature, highly developed mental attributes on the field since a young age.

Another description of the player goes on to explain, “Joao Neves is a quick, agile and technically gifted central midfielder, with notable passing and tackling skills, quick reactions, and close ball control.

“He is also known for his stamina, bravery and composure on the ball, as well as for his balance and the ability to retain possession in tight spaces when under pressure. In addition, despite his relatively slight frame, he ranks high on the percentile for aerial battles won.”
