Match Preview: Manchester City vs Sheffield United (FA Cup Semi-Final)
Manchester City refocus their attentions towards the FA Cup on Saturday afternoon, as they take on Sheffield United in the competition’s semi-final.
Last time out, City travelled to the Allianz Arena as they took on Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Having rocked the Bavarian side 3-0 in the first-leg of the contest, Pep Guardiola’s side just had to hold on for 90 minutes to book their spot in the semi-finals, but had their eyes set on adding to their lead on aggregate. Erling Haaland sent the ball into the roof of the net in the 57th minute, making up for a missed penalty earlier in the match.
However, City would not leave with a second clean sheet against the Munich club, as Joshua Kimmich scored from the penalty spot following a Manuel Akanji handball in the match’s dying embers.
Pep Guardiola’s side advanced to the semi-finals of the FA Cup having thrashed club legend Vincent Kompany’s Burnley 6-0 back in March, with Haaland scoring another hat-trick, complemented by a Julian Alvarez brace.
On the other side of Saturday’s ticket sits Sheffield United, who currently sit second in the Championship and hold plenty of hope over a return to the English top-flight for next season. In their last game, the Blades defeated Bristol City as Manchester City loanee James McAtee put the ball past Max O’Leary, helping secure a vital three points.
Unfortunately for Sheffield United, both James McAtee and Tommy Doyle – both of whom are on loan from the Etihad Stadium this season – will be unavailable for this contest due to competition rules.
