Manchester City enter yet another January transfer window deadline day in the midst of a Premier League title race and no expectation of doing any major business.

The final 24 hours of the January market are likely to be dominated by the situation of Joao Cancelo, who is expected to be announced as a Bayern Munich player before the official deadline for English clubs arrives.

The Portugal international is set to join the Bundesliga giants on an initial loan deal until the end of the season, with Bayern Munich holding a purchase option for a fee understood to be in the region of €70 million.

Elsewhere, City may look for a replacement at left-back during the closing hours, however that seems a very distant possibility at this stage, and any other business is more likely to involve academy dealings and loan moves.

Nevertheless, City Xtra are here to keep you up to date with all of the latest transfer news and developments on Deadline Day, with the January window set to shut at 11 PM [UK] on Tuesday night.

16:28 – Bernardo Silva claims confirmed by Portuguese media

Barcelona have seen a loan proposal rejected by Manchester City for Bernardo Silva, as confirmed by David Novo of Portuguese newspaper Record.

Any departure for the Portugal international from the Etihad Stadium today is being described as ‘completely out of the question’, while the player himself also has no intention of leaving City in the middle of the season.

16:00 – Luke Mbete joins Bolton Wanderers

Manchester City have recalled Luke Mbete from his season-long loan at Huddersfield Town, and repositioned him with Bolton Wanderers on another loan deal until the end of the ongoing campaign, it has been confirmed.

15:59 – Premier League trio make Kalvin Phillips enquiries

Sean Dyche and Everton are one of three Premier League sides who have made enquiries over the possibility of signing Kalvin Phillips on a loan deal from Manchester City, according to The Sun.

Additionally, both Leeds United and West Ham United are claimed to have made exactly the same enquiries about a player who was signed by Pep Guardiola’s side just last summer, but has struggled for minutes due to injury.

However, City are unwilling to do business for the England international midfielder.

15:44 – Antonee Robinson bid lined up for the summer

Manchester City will make a bid for Fulham left-back Antonee Robinson in the summer after being quoted £20 million for the USA international defender, according to a report from The Sun.

It has been reported that Manchester City had already enquired about Robinson before Joao Cancelo’s exit for Bayern Munich on an initial loan deal with an option to buy, but the Premier League champions plan to ‘step up their efforts’ at the end of the season.

15:02 – City’s stance on Cole Palmer

Manchester City have no interest in sending Cole Palmer out on loan for the remainder of the season, confirms The Telegraph’s James Ducker.

That follows the earlier claim that City had rejected such a proposal from Scottish Premier League giants Rangers.

12:55 – Barcelona make Bernardo offer

Barcelona have returned to Manchester City with an offer to sign Bernardo Silva on loan until the end of the season, including an option to buy the midfielder in the summer, as per AS.

Manchester City have rejected the approach.

12:43 – City set for Academy exit

Swansea City are closing in on the permanent signing of Liam Smith from Manchester City, with the 19-year-old currently undergoing a medical at the Championship club – as per Nizaar Kinsella.

12:39 – Cole Palmer opportunity blocked

Rangers have become the latest club to see their interest in taking Cole Palmer on loan for the rest of the season, with the promise of regular first-team football, rejected by Manchester City – according to The Sun.

It is claimed that City boss Pep Guardiola insisted that the 20 year-old versatile forward has a role to play at the club this season.

12:28 – Ben Chilwell back on the radar

Manchester City could return for Ben Chilwell this summer, according to Jack Gaughan and Tom Collomosse for the Mail.

It is stated that the Premier League champions could return after opting against triggering his £42 million release clause when the player left Leicester City for Chelsea back in 2020.

City have long been in the market for a solution at left-back, and that interest in recruitment in the position will only have been heightened by the exit of Joao Cancelo from the football club on deadline day.

12:23 – Rafael Leao being closely monitored

With Manchester City reportedly wanting to sign another forward this summer, the Premier League champions are closely monitoring AC Milan’s Rafael Leao – as per The Mail.

As such, it is highlighted that should City secure a winger this summer, then Phil Foden’s natural progression would be to move inside behind Erling Haaland.

12:17 – City interested in James Maddison

Manchester City are interested in a move for Leicester City midfielder James Maddison this summer, according to a report from the Mail.

While it is highlighted that City hold an interest in Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham, Jack Gaughan and Tom Collomosse report that they have also identified Maddison – with Pep Guardiola wanting more goals from those behind Erling Haaland.

However, Manchester City firming up initial interest in James Maddison – a player Pep Guardiola admires – may be contingent on other factors, including a pursuit of a winger and Phil Foden’s proposed role in the team.

11:54 – Joao Cancelo speaks out

On leaving Manchester City: “My instagram video might look like a goodbye from the club. Nevertheless, I loved my time there and always gave my best. I am focused now here at Bayern and want to win as much as possible here now. But, it is no final goodbye.”

On his decision to leave Manchester City: “I’ve not had much game time in the past few weeks, which influenced my decision. It has nothing to do with my relationship with Pep [Guardiola].”

11:38 – Left-back names circulating, but the truth is…

Despite names such as Fulham’s Antonee Robinson and Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell being floated online, Manchester City’s stance has not changed, according to Simon Bajkowski of the Manchester Evening News: They are very unlikely to replace Joao Cancelo before the January transfer window ends.

11:20 – Joao Cancelo joins Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich have confirmed the signing of Joao Cancelo from Manchester City on loan until the end of the season.

As previously report, the Bundesliga club will have an option to sign the player on a permanent deal for €70 million.

10:02 – Will City sign a left-back?

No, is the current answer.

As per Ben Ransom of Sky Sports, the Premier League champions’ stance on signing a replacement for Joao Cancelo has ‘not changed overnight’, and they are not expecting to sign a left-back at this stage of the transfer window.

10:00 – Joao Cancelo statement

Writing on his Instagram after completing his medical tests at Bayern Munich, Joao Cancelo seemingly confirmed his own departure from Manchester City on Instagram as he accompanied a highlight reel of his best moments with, “Once a Cityzen, always a Cityzen. Thank you.”

09:58 – What is expected at City today?

In short, nothing.

As per Martin Blackburn of the Sun, a ‘quiet day’ is expected at Manchester City both in terms of first-team and academy dealings.

However, the possibility of a fresh loan deal for Luke Mbete remains following a largely unsuccessful first-half of the season at Huddersfield Town.

Martin Blackburn reports that the centre-back could return to the Etihad Stadium initially, and be immediately sent out to another club.

09:49 – Bernardo Silva’s future

After Joao Cancelo’s departure for Bayern Munich, some suggested that Bernardo Silva could follow him through the exit door at the Etihad Stadium on transfer deadline day.

However, as per talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, that will not be the case and Bernardo Silva will be remaining at Manchester City for the remainder of the ongoing season.

09:22 – Manchester City set to sign Cardiff and Wales goalkeeper

Manchester City are set to sign Cardiff City under-16 and Wales under-17 international goalkeeper Lewys Benjamin, according to Fabrizio Romano. The player will join in the summer, with paperwork now signed and medical tests taking place.
