David Coote will take charge of Manchester City’s Carabao Cup clash with Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday night, the EFL have announced.

Manchester City return to competitive action in midweek, looking to beat the current Carabao Cup holders Liverpool and progress to the quarter-finals of the competition.

Goals from Julian Alvarez and Riyad Mahrez secured a 2-0 win over Chelsea in the last round, as the Sky Blues look to win the League Cup for a ninth time in their history.

Thursday’s fixture will be City’s first since the FIFA World Cup; with Erling Haaland, Riyad Mahrez, Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan and Sergio Gomez having all started in a friendly against Girona on Saturday.

Pep Guardiola’s side don’t return to Premier League action until Wednesday 28th December, travelling to Elland Road to play Leeds United.

Ahead of Thursday’s cup tie, the EFL have announced the match officials for Manchester City versus Liverpool.

Match Referee

David Coote will take charge of the meeting between the two North West heavyweights on Thursday evening.

The referee has officiated 13 games so far this season, showing 43 yellow cards and one red card.

Coote last took charge of Pep Guardiola’s side in August, when City beat Bournemouth 4-0 at the Etihad Stadium.

Assistant Referees

Coote will be accompanied in East Manchester by Assistant Referees Nick Hopton and Tim Wood on Thursday evening.

Fourth Official

Paul Tierney, who has been announced as the referee for Manchester City’s trip to Stamford Bridge in the New Year, has been appointed as the Fourth Official.

NB: VAR will NOT be in operation at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday evening.
