Glenn Nyberg to referee UEFA Champions League clash between Manchester City and RB Leipzig
Glenn Nyberg will take charge of Manchester City final home game in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night, it has been announced.
City will be hoping to secure a fifth successive victory in their first steps towards defending their UEFA Champions League crown – a result that would in turn ensure their place as group winners ahead of the last-16 draw.
The current holders defeated BSC Young Boys on matchday four of the competition, as a brace from Erling Haaland was complimented by a goal from Phil Foden, on a night when the visitors failed to record a single shot on goal at the Etihad Stadium.
Erling Haaland was on the scoresheet once again in Manchester City’s most-recent outing, as the Norwegian’s goal was cancelled out by Trent Alexander-Arnold in a 1-1 draw between the Premier League champions and Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium.
Ahead of Tuesday night’s clash in the north-west, UEFA have now announced the Match Officials for Manchester City’s penultimate outing in the group stage as they host RB Leipzig at the Etihad Stadium on matchday five of the Champions League.
Match Referee
Glenn Nyberg has been named as the on-field match referee for Manchester City’s meeting with RB Leipzig at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night, with the Swedish referee taking on his fifth appointment in European competition this season.
Across his four previous outings in the UEFA Champions League and Europa League, the 35-year-old referee has shown a total of 13 yellow cards, no red cards, but awarded one penalty kick in the process.
This will be Nyberg’s first time in charge of Manchester City’s senior team, having only come into contact with the Etihad club on one previous occasion; taking charge of City’s under-19 squad during a 0-2 win over Feyenoord U19 in the UEFA Youth League back in 2017.
Phil Foden, Brahim Diaz, and Eric Garcia were among the Manchester City academy players to have been officiated by Glenn Nyberg that afternoon.
Assistant Referees
Nyberg will be accompanied at the Etihad Stadium by Assistant Referees Mahbod Beigi and Andreas Söderqvist, completing an all-Swedish team of on-field match officials at Manchester City this week.
Video Assistant Referees
Overviewing proceedings will be Video Assistant Referee Alejandro Hernández of Spain, alongside his compatriot and Assistant Video Assistant Referee on the night Carlos del Cerro Grande.
Fourth Official
Adam Ladebäck of Sweden has been named as the Fourth Official, and will be overseeing conduct within the two dugouts and the behaviour of managers Pep Guardiola and Marco Rose.
