Manchester City midfielder undergoes medical ahead of permanent Etihad Stadium exit
Manchester City are expected to finalise the permanent exit of Shea Charles from the Etihad Stadium this week, with a medical taking place on Monday, according to reports.
Having made his senior Manchester City debut on the final day of the Premier League season last campaign, the 19-year-old is now set to make his first concrete steps into consistent senior club football from next season.
Charles will be part of a young and exciting Southampton squad who will be vying for an immediate return back to the English top-flight, having succumbed to relegation last season alongside Leeds United and Leicester City.
Now, in a significant development towards the teenager officially becoming a Southampton player this week, a new report has offered details on the player’s scheduled medical, as well as clauses included in the deal from the part of Manchester City.
According to the information of Simon Jones at MailSport, Northern Ireland international Shea Charles will now undergo his Southampton medical from 12noon on Monday, ahead of finalising a deal worth up to £15 million from Manchester City.
As part of the agreement between the two clubs, Premier League champions City will be confident that they still have a major say in the youngster’s development and future, having retained a sell-on, buy-back, and matching bid rights in the deal.
Charles will become the latest in a long line of Manchester City Academy stars to swap the Etihad Stadium for St Mary’s on the south coast, and could replace Romeo Lavia – another of City’s former starlets who appears set for an immediate Premier League return in a big money move.
The Belgium international was one of the shining lights in Southampton’s relegated Premier League squad last season, and despite Manchester City holding a £40 million release clause on the player that comes into action next summer, a number of top clubs are vying for his signature.
Liverpool are expected to hold talks with the player and his representatives in the coming days and weeks, while Chelsea are long-standing admirers. For now, Manchester City are being kept updated on the situation given their right to match any future bids this summer.
