Julian Alvarez will sign a contract extension at Manchester City on Wednesday, according to a new report.

The 23-year-old has enjoyed a eye-catching debut campaign at the Etihad Stadium after a £14 million move from River Plate last summer.

Despite competing for minutes in attack with first-team regular Erling Haaland, Alvarez has already netted 10 times in 32 appearances across all competitions in City colours.

However, Alvarez’s stock has risen profoundly since he helped Argentina in lifting the World Cup in Qatar, scoring four times in his nation’s run to international glory, with a crucial brace in their semi-final beating of Croatia.

Talk of a potential move away from the Etihad Stadium this summer has been rebuffed for Alvarez, who is expected to be a key figure in Pep Guardiola’s squad next season.

A new contract has been in the works for Alvarez at Manchester City, who are understood to be keen to reward the young forward for a stellar debut campaign for club and his shining displays for Argentina.

City face RB Leipzig in return leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday evening, with Alvarez expected to feature against the German outfit.

The Argentine nearly broke the deadlock after coming off the bench in City’s league meeting with Crystal Palace at the weekend as his effort from the edge of the box went glazing over the bar after a sharp turn from the attacker.

As per the information of César Luis Merlo, Julian Alvarez will sign a one-year contract extension with Manchester City on Wednesday, tying him down to the Blues till June 2028.

Talks have been held between the Premier League champions and Alvarez’s agent over fresh terms that will see the forward secure improve pay terms from his existing City deal, which is set to run till 2027.

City remain in the hunt for a third successive Premier League title as they look to chase down current leaders Arsenal, who are five points clear of the reigning champions at the top of the pile.

An FA Cup quarter-final tie against Burnley next awaits Manchester City and Pep Guardiola, who is likely to rotate his pack to keep his players fresh for the title run-in.
