The possibility of Leroy Sane returning to the Etihad Stadium this summer could become more realistic in the coming months, according to a report from Germany.

The now 27 year-old left Manchester City in the summer of 2020, after missing almost the entirety of the 2019/20 campaign with a serious ACL injury sustained during the FA Community Shield against Liverpool at the start of the campaign.

Since then, Manchester City have seen a slow progression of their more fast wide players exit the club, with Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling being the latest to leave for Arsenal and Chelsea respectively last summer.

However, with City entering a period of the year when they are sounding out potential options for what some are expecting to be a major summer overhaul of their playing squad, the idea of a return for Leroy Sane may have entered the fray.

That is according to a report from German newspaper BILD, as translated and relayed by ‘Get German Football News‘, who state that as a result of Leroy Sané’s ‘poor performances’, the idea of selling the forward is now described as being ‘a possibility’.

It is stated that officials at Bayern Munich expect players’ performances to match their salaries – something that Leroy Sané along with Serge Gnabry have failed to do in recent matches. As such, if both players ‘continue to underperform’, then the Bundesliga giants will not rule out an exit for either player providing they receive a ‘big enough offer’.

For Manchester City, the Premier League champions are expected to be in the market for a new wide forward in the upcoming summer transfer window, but have so far only been monitoring the performances of certain players.

That scouting mission has taken them to Italy, where they have kept a close eye on the progress of AC Milan’s Rafael Leao as well as Napoli’s exciting Georgian forward Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

However, given Manchester City’s ongoing relationship with Bayern Munich concerning the deal struck for Joao Cancelo back in January – and the German club’s option to buy at the end of the season – some may presume that an opportunity may arise concerning Leroy Sane.

The Germany international had a hugely successful spell at Manchester City, and contributed significantly to Pep Guardiola’s early success as manager of the club, winning two Premier League titles in their three years together.

For now, it remains to be seen whether Bayern Munich’s stance on a potential sale strengthens, and whether Leroy Sane’s performances over the course of the coming months convince club officials that he is worth retaining for the future.
