Match Preview: Southampton vs Manchester City (Carabao Cup Quarter-Final)
Following their 4-0 thrashing of Chelsea over the weekend, Manchester City take on Southampton in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.
On Sunday, City played their second straight fixture against Chelsea, with the most recent meeting being for the fourth round of the FA Cup.
Sunday’s match was never really in doubt, as Manchester City defeated the West London side 4-0, knocking them out of the competition after Chelsea had made it to the finals of last season’s tournament.
Riyad Mahrez led the Sky Blues’ scoring charge with a brace, bringing his total goal count against Chelsea this season to four across three matches. Julian Alvarez and Phil Foden also found their way onto the score sheet during the victory.
Manchester City made their way into the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup after a thrilling 3-2 win over Liverpool in late December, as they returned to action following the month-long break for the World Cup.
It was a close match with goals from both sides coming within minutes of each other until Nathan Ake’s header from a Kevin De Bruyne cross put Manchester City ahead – a position that they would maintain until full-time.
This week, City meet Southampton, who currently sit bottom of the Premier League table but reaching the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup via a victory against League One side Lincoln City.
That win came despite an own goal from former Manchester City prospect Gavin Bazunu, which was made up for by a brace from Che Adams.
