Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has spoken highly of striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, as he previewed Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Everton at the Etihad Stadium.

The Sky Blues conclude the calendar year against the Toffees knowing a victory would see them move within two points of league leaders Arsenal.

City marked their return to Premier League action with a 3-1 win against Leeds United on Wednesday, while Everton suffered an agonising late loss to Wolves at Goodison Park on Boxing Day.

Frank Lampard’s side are winless in their last four Premier League outings and sit just one point above the relegation zone ahead of the weekend.

Pep Guardiola has won ten consecutive matches against the Merseyside club in all competitions, with the Blues winning 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium last season.

Despite Everton’s poor form and City’s formidable recent record, Pep Guardiola was quick to highlight the risks posed by the Toffees ahead of the New Year’s Eve clash.

“The last two games against Liverpool and Leeds were so demanding, high intensity, we handle really well,” said Guardiola.

“I don’t know what Everton will do, sometimes they press high but not last season. We have to know the transitions, start from Pickford. The quality is there, they have exceptional players.

“In this period, everyone’s thinking of New Year’s Eve, the distraction can be a problem. Two days after Leeds, we have to be ready.”

The Catalan also mentioned the threat of forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who is set to feature at the Etihad Stadium after a prolonged period on the sidelines due to injury.

“Unfortunately for him was injured for the last period, doesn’t have the consistency to play. On top he’s exceptional, long balls, second balls. He’s a dangerous player,” said Guardiola.

Calvert-Lewin has made just six Premier League appearances for Everton so far this season.
