Phil Foden has undergone surgery in London for acute appendicitis, Manchester City have confirmed in a statement this weekend.

The England international has been away on duties for Gareth Southgate’s side this week, but fell ill on Saturday during training and has since gone under the knife at a hospital in London.

Foden will now enter a period of rehabilitation in the north-west, hoping to recover as soon as possible to make himself available for Pep Guardiola’s squad as soon as possible, in a month that is likely to decide Manchester City’s season.

Here is everything you need to know about Phil Foden’s injury setback.

What has happened?

Phil Foden has undergone an operation this weekend for acute appendicitis, after falling ill after England training on Saturday.

The 22 year-old’s surgery took place in London after releasing himself from England international duties, and he will now return to Manchester to continue his recovery from the operation and overall process.

What have Manchester City said?

A statement from the Premier League champions on Sunday afternoon read:

“Manchester City can confirm Phil Foden has left the England squad after undergoing surgery in London for acute appendicitis.

“Phil will now return to Manchester to begin rehabilitation.

“He will not be fit for this weekend’s Premier League game at home to Liverpool and it is unclear at this stage how long he will be unavailable for.

“Everyone at Manchester City wishes Phil a speedy recovery.”

How many games could Phil Foden miss?

Phil Foden is confirmed to miss two games already across all competitions, with England taking on Ukraine in a 2024 European Championships qualifier, and Manchester City taking on Liverpool in the return of domestic club football on Saturday afternoon.

Official guidance on acute appendicitis states Phil Foden “should be able to return to normal activities in a couple of weeks.”

However, it is stated that Foden “may need to avoid more strenuous activities for 4 to 6 weeks after open surgery.”

Depending on Phil Foden’s recovery time, here are the matches he could now miss:

Recovery in two weeks means he would miss:

  • Liverpool (H), Premier League
  • Southampton (A), Premier League

Recovery in four weeks means he would then also miss:

  • Bayern Munich (H), UEFA Champions League Quarter-Final First-Leg
  • Leicester City (H), Premier League
  • Bayern Munich (A), UEFA Champions League Quarter-Final Second-Leg
  • Sheffield United (N), FA Cup Semi-Final

Recovery in six weeks means he would then also miss:

  • Arsenal (H), Premier League
  • Fulham (A), Premier League
  • West Ham (H), Premier League
  • Leeds United (H), Premier League

Pep Guardiola is expected to provide a more detailed analysis and update on the situation during his pre-match press conference ahead of Manchester City against Liverpool – which takes place this Friday afternoon.
