Manchester City face the prospect of potentially being demoted to League Two, should the club be punished with expulsion from the top-flight for alleged breaches of financial regulations.

The six-time Premier League winners were hit with charges for over 100 alleged breaches of financial regulations on Monday following the conclusion of a four-year investigation.

Charges relate to breaches over a nine-year period and are based on apparent breaches of Premier League rules regarding financial information, profitability and sustainability, player and manager remuneration, failure to cooperate and UEFA regulations.

Manchester City stated that they were “surprised” by the Premier League’s decision and “look forward to this matter being put to rest once and for all.”

Should the Blues be found guilty then punishments could range from an unlimited fine, points deductions or even expulsion from the Premier League.

If the Premier League commission advised for the extraordinary latter option then City would reportedly face the prospect of potentially dropping all the way down to League Two.

James Ducker reports that the EFL would have no obligation to accept the club in the extraordinary event that City were expelled from the Premier League.

According to the Independent, should the EFL accept City then current rules would not allow immediate entry into the Championship, meaning the Blues would have to enter League Two.

However, Sky Sports recently claimed that most people expect the club to receive a ‘small points deduction’ as punishment for the charges they face from the Premier League, if found guilty.

Furthermore, a senior club source recently told City Xtra that the club are ‘positive’ of a ‘good outcome.

City Xtra were further told that the club were ‘confident’ of successfully overcoming the series of alleged financial breaches.

In wake of the charges, Manchester City have rehired prestigious lawyer Lord Pannick KC, who is set to defend the club alongside Paul Harris KC.
