Manchester City are ‘positive’ of a ‘good outcome’ after the Premier League charged the club with over 100 alleged breaches of financial regulations, a senior club source has told City Xtra.

The six-time Premier League winners were hit with a series of charges on Monday morning regarding alleged breaches of financial regulations over a nine-year period.

Alleged breaches took place over an extended period from 2009 to 2018 and relate to financial information, profitability and sustainability, player and manager remuneration, failure to cooperate and UEFA regulations.

Charges by the Premier League have now been referred to an independent commission, with a Manchester City club statement stating that they were “surprised” by the Premier League’s decision and “look forward to this matter being put to rest once and for all.”

Manchester City are now preparing to do battle with the Premier League, who have been investigating the Sky Blues for four years.

Since the Abu Dhabi takeover, City have won six league titles, under three different managers – Pep Guardiola, Manuel Pellegrini and Roberto Mancini.

Should Manchester City be found guilty then the club could face expulsion from the Premier League, while other possible punishments could include points deductions and unlimited fines.

However, a senior club source has told City Xtra that after meetings throughout the morning, the club are ‘positive’ of a ‘good outcome’.

City Xtra were further told that the club were ‘confident’ of successfully overcoming the series of alleged financial breaches.

In 2020, the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled in favour of City and overturned a ban from European club competitions after alleged breaches of Financial Fair Play regulations.

Eyebrows have also been raised in regards to the timing of the Premier League’s announcement, given the imminent publication of a white paper by the UK Government relating to an independent footballing regulator.

On Monday, a Manchester City statement read: “Manchester City FC is surprised by the issuing of these alleged breaches of the Premier League Rules, particularly given the extensive engagement and vast amount of detailed materials that the EPL has been provided with.

“The Club welcomes the review of this matter by an independent Commission, to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position.

“As such we look forward to this matter being put to rest once and for all.”
