Sergio Aguero set to return to action in Barcelona S.C. friendly in January

Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero is set to make a return to the football pitch later this month, appearing as a guest star in the 2023 Noche Amarilla.

The 34 year-old has not featured in a professional football match since November 2021, during an eventual 1-1 home draw for FC Barcelona against Alavés – a game that would end up being his final game before retiring.

Sergio Aguero was taken to hospital with chest discomfort diagnosed as cardiac arrhythmia during that match, and despite it being initially reported that he would be out of action for at least three months, the Argentine announced his retirement from football on the advice of doctors the following month.

Aguero is regarded by many associated within the sport to have been one of the greatest to ever grace the game, scoring a staggering 260 goals and providing 73 assists across 390 appearances for Manchester City between 2011 and 2021.

While his playing days at the very top level are regarded as being over, and Sergio Aguero is certainly enjoying his retirement, the Premier League icon is now set to make a return to the game later this month in Ecuador.

In an official announcement on Sunday evening, Ecuadorian sports club Barcelona S.C confirmed that Sergio Aguero would be a guest star appearing in the 2023 Noche Amarilla on January 28.

The Noche Amarilla is a traditional annual friendly played by Barcelona de Guayaquil featuring a football legend, with Brazilian icon Ronaldinho having taken part in the match back in 2016.

In light of the announcement around the former Atletico Madrid and Barcelona forward, Sergio Aguero said, “I look forward to Noche Amarilla, to have fun and have a good time with the fans of Barcelona S.C.”

“I’ve had check-ups from the cardiologist, I am very well and I have already started training, so I will be able to play in the Noche Amarilla. I hope to have fun and feel the pitch again.”

Aguero continued, “I went out to eat in Qatar and was watching Ecuador’s first match in the World Cup. Some fans of Barcelona S.C. recognised me and asked me to come to Noche Amarilla.”
