Manchester City’s back-up goalkeeper has revealed to supporters what they can expect of him following the injury blow to Ederson against Liverpool at the weekend.

The Brazilian international shot-stopper and Manchester City’s number one choice between the sticks sustained a thigh injury early in the second-half at Anfield, whilst also giving away a penalty in the process which would prove to be the levelling goal for the hosts.

A subsequent diagnosis on Ederson’s problem has since revealed that the 30-year-old could be out for up to one month, and as such throws his availability into severe doubt for Manchester City’s showdown meeting with Arsenal at the end of March.

The absence of City’s number one opens up a huge opportunity for Stefan Ortega to impress in goal under Pep Guardiola, having long sought out a run of high-profile matches since joining the club from Arminia Bielefeld in the summer of 2022.

Speaking after the 1-1 draw at Anfield on Sunday afternoon, Stefan Ortega admitted that while he ‘enjoyed every second’ of the call to action against Liverpool in the second-half, he was ‘ready and prepared’ to do his job to the highest standard.

“I just thought to do my job,” Ortega explained. “I do it every day in training and it was about doing the same. I enjoyed every second. It’s nothing new what came – I was ready and prepared.”

Reflecting on the contest, Ortega continued, “It was a solid performance. A tough game – it’s not easy to play against Liverpool, especially there. One point is good – both teams had chances to win but in the end it was even.”

Away from on-field responsibilities for Stefan Ortega at Manchester City, the German keeper’s future at the Etihad Stadium remains in doubt with his current contract expiring in the summer of 2025 and him attracting plenty of interest from across Europe.

City had to reject interest from Bayern Munich last summer in order to retain the services of the highly-rated goalkeeper, while there is an intention from within the City Football Academy offices to renew the 31-year-old’s agreement at the Etihad.
