Etihad officials are closing in on agreements for two key members of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City first-team squad, according to a new report.

While plans for the forthcoming summer transfer window are well underway, the retention of key members of the current crop of Etihad superstars remains a priority for those in relevant positions at the football club.

The improvements in defence have played a crucial role in Manchester City’s success so far this season, with Nathan Ake offering a sensational profile in the left-back role, while Rico Lewis has shone in a variety of positions when called upon.

Now, according to a new report this week, both members of Pep Guardiola’s back-line are expected to reap the rewards of their fine work through the form of fresh contractual agreements in the coming weeks.

That is as per the information of Chris Bailey reporting for The National, who states that Nathan Ake is now set to sign a new long-term contract with Manchester City, keeping him at the Etihad Stadium ‘during his peak years’ and ‘into his thirties’.

The Dutchman will as such become one of two City defenders to pen fresh agreements with the Premier League champions, with the same report revealing that Rico Lewis is also set for ‘an improved contract’ tying him to the club ‘for years to come’.

The 18 year-old breakthrough star reportedly remains ‘an integral part’ of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City squad and will receive a ‘bumper pay rise’ as a reward for his exemplary efforts during a crucial phase of the ongoing season.

Netherlands international Nathan Ake has registered the third most appearances of any defender within Pep Guardiola’s squad so far this season, further emphasising the role he plays in the Catalan’s system.

With 36 appearances to his name, 29 of which having been starts for the club, Nathan Ake stands alongside Ruben Dias and Manuel Akanji as being the most called upon defenders at the Etihad Stadium.

As for Rico Lewis, the England youth international played a crucial role at right-back and in defensive midfield following the conclusion of the World Cup, enabling a smoother transition for Pep Guardiola’s side to a three-at-the-back formation.

Following his impressive performances, Lewis’ game-time has since seen a gradual decline, but his role in Manchester City’s squad in both the immediate and long-term future remains unquestionable.
