Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne provided his 100th Premier League assist in a 4-1 win against Southampton on Saturday.

City cut the gap to league leaders Arsenal to five points as the Gunners face Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

After a frustrating start at St. Mary’s, the Premier League champions took the lead from Erling Haaland headed in his 43rd goal of the season from De Bruyne’s cross to break the deadlock on the cusp of half time.

Jack Grealish doubled City’s advantage by following in from his initial effort that was saved from former City shotstopper Gavin Bazunu before Haaland made it three in acrobatic fashion.

Southampton pulled one back before Julian Alvarez netted from the penalty spot to restore the three-goal cushion for Pep Guardiola’s men.

Speaking in a post-match interview with Sky Sports, De Bruyne was asked if he was aware he was on the brink of reaching 100 Premier League assists going into the clash.

“I was aware of it because there was a lot of talk about it online,” the Belgium international said.

De Bruyne is the quickest player to hit the 100 assist milestone in Premier League history, reaching the tally 56 games ahead of former Arsenal man Cesc Fabregas.

The four-time Premier League winner added: “I don’t compare myself to other players, I just try to create as many chances as possible.”

City extended their winning run to eight games across all competitions ahead of their Champions League quarter final opening leg against Bayern Munich at the Etihad Stadium.

Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez are in fine form ahead of the tie, with Kevin De Bruyne crediting the forwards he has played alongside for hitting the 100 assist mark.

“If they (the forwards) score, I get the assist. I’m happy but the important thing is to win,” he said.
