Ilkay Gundogan’s representative has attended a meeting with La Liga leaders FC Barcelona on Thursday, as per emerging reports from Spain.

The Manchester City captain is currently set to see his contract expire at the end of the ongoing season, despite the Etihad club’s intention to enter into talks over a possible renewal of his deal – such is his importance to Pep Guardiola’s system.

However, in the background, it now appears as though his representatives are entertaining talks with potential suitors, should no agreement be found between the relevant parties over an extended contract at Manchester City.

Those talks have now taken them to La Liga, where FC Barcelona are known to have held an interest in the former Borussia Dortmund star midfielder for a number of months – an interest that has exponentially developed as his contract winds down.

According to the information of renowned Barcelona journalist Gerard Romero, the representative of the Manchester City captain had a meeting with the Catalan giants on Thursday morning.

It is further explained – as translated and relayed by Sport Witness – that Ilkay Gundogan’s agent spent all morning at the headquarters of FC Barcelona, and was captured on camera when leaving the facilities – in footage shared by Romero on his Twitter account.

Gerard Romero has further pointed out that Gundogan heading closer towards the expiry date in his current Manchester City contract, the Germany international is a ‘very real’ option for the cash-strapped La Liga leaders.

Ilkay Gundogan has most recently played an integral role in Manchester City firing to the very top of the Premier League table, featuring in a statement 1-3 away victory against Arsenal on Wednesday night.

The reigning Premier League champions, despite having played a game more than their nearest title challengers, will now have their sights fully-focussed on an outright lead at the top of the table.

That pursuit takes them to Nottingham Forest this weekend, where they take on the league’s newcomers in a battle at the City Ground, before heading out to Germany to embark on the first-leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 clash with RB Leipzig.
