Manchester City’s Elite Development Squad cruised past Arsenal in Premier League 2 on Saturday afternoon, after a stunning first-half attacking display.

Brian Barry-Murphy’s side raced into an early lead just eight minutes into the clash at the Academy Stadium, after a ball over the top from Oscar Bobb was brought down by Alex Robertson, who rounded the Arsenal goalkeeper before sliding the ball home into an empty net.

Less than 10 minutes later, and City had doubled their lead, this time via another combination as Dire Mebude was sent through on goal, before unselfishly squaring to the in-form goalscoring machine Carlos Borges to tap home.

Before the half hour mark, Alex Robertson then grabbed his brace, turning his marking defender and sliding the ball past the Arsenal goalkeeper once again on 27 minutes.

The goals didn’t stop there, as Manchester City put the game beyond any doubt with two quick fire goals right before the half-time interval. Dire Mebude added to his earlier assist with a goal of his own, finishing off a one-two with Oscar Bobb, before Carlos Borges got his brace.

The second-half saw more of the same domination from Manchester City, with a little more urgency from Arsenal to put credit on their name.

But it was all to no avail from the visitors, as Dire Mebude made it 6-0 and ensured that it was a brace for all three of Manchester City’s goalscorers – jinking into the box, reaching the byline and smashing the ball home.

That crushing win for Manchester City’s Elite Development Squad now means that they move to the top of Premier League 2 after 12 games, one point ahead of Arsenal who now drop down to second.
