Real Madrid targeting Manchester City defender as cover for five-time Champions League winning veteran

| Last Updated:

Manchester City full-back Yan Couto has been identified by Real Madrid as suitable cover for veteran defender Daniel Carvajal.

The 21-year-old, who was an unused substitute for the FA Community Shield Final in 2021, is one of several Manchester City youngsters to have impressed during a current loan spell away from the Etihad Stadium.

Couto is part of the Girona team bidding to make history by winning the La Liga title, although the Spanish side have fallen five points behind league leaders Real Madrid after a 4-0 loss at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday.

The Brazilian full-back is the latest Girona star to be linked with a potential permanent transfer next summer, with Couto currently on loan at the Catalonian club from Manchester City.

Couto, who is out of contract at the Etihad Stadium in 2025, joined Girona as a loanee for the second time in his career at the start of the season, with the right-back having spent the previous campaign at SC Braga.

Manchester City’s plans for the 21-year-old beyond the current campaign are unknown, however the full-back is drawing transfer interest from a number of clubs, including Real Madrid.

Sport Witness relay a report by Spanish outlet Marca, claiming that Los Blancos have identified Couto as potential cover and competition for veteran full-back Daniel Carvajal.

Real Madrid’s head of scouting Juni Calafat is driving the La Liga giants’ interest in the Manchester City loanee, however Etihad chiefs are ‘unlikely to make it easy’ for Carlo Ancelotti’s side to sign the Brazilian.

City represent an ‘obstacle’ to Real Madrid’s transfer plans for Couto, although the Sky Blues did recently hand Kyle Walker a new contract until 2026, despite the Englishman being 33-years-old.

Couto has registered seven assists in 23 La Liga appearances so far this season and also scored during Girona’s Copa del Rey campaign.
