“It’s not just three” – Pep Guardiola names five clubs involved in Premier League title race

| Last Updated:

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola believes a total of five clubs that he believes are involved in the ongoing Premier League title race.

City are currently engaged in a hot pursuit of league leaders Liverpool at the top of the division, with the Merseyside giants having no greater push to succeed than the pending departure of legendary Anfield coach Jurgen Klopp at the end of the season.

Manchester City have been hampered by injuries during the first-half of the season, but with the squad largely back to full compliment at the perfect time for Pep Guardiola and his staff, there is a real belief that a fourth successive top-flight crown could be on the cards.

But it isn’t as simple as a three-horse race involving Manchester City this season, despite the views of pundits and journalists, with Pep Guardiola insistent on there being one or two further clubs that could yet mount a stronger challenge in the coming weeks.

Speaking to the media after Wednesday night’s victory over Burnley at the Etihad Stadium, Pep Guardiola admitted that Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool may not be the only clubs in with a shout of claiming this season’s Premier League crown.

“I think it’s not just three,” Guardiola said. “I don’t know who they are but Tottenham is still there, and Aston Villa is still there. It can change I think.”

“My feeling when I see Arsenal playing is they control many aspects of the game, when you see Liverpool it’s quite similar also. When you see the games, every game they are better than the opponent.”

He continued, “You can lose games, yeah, of course. But in terms of (the performance), they are better. And I know how strong they are but still we are there, and we want to continue.”

Julian Alvarez’s brace put Manchester City in control of their midweek fixture at the Etihad Stadium, while a third strike from Rodri put the contest beyond any doubt and the reach of Vincent Kompany’s side.

City are now putting together preparations for another late contest in the coming days, as Premier League scheduling pits them against Brentford away from home on Monday night, in another challenging travel journey for away supporters.
