“As far as I’m concerned” – Manager reveals clear intent to recruit Manchester City star THIS month

Roy Hodgson has sent a clear, public message of intent over Crystal Palace’s interest in Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips this month.

The England international is eyeing a move away from the Etihad Stadium this month with a view towards securing more consistent top-level game time ahead of the upcoming European Championships with Gareth Southgate’s side this summer.

The 28-year-old has found himself somewhat frozen out of Pep Guardiola’s plans at Manchester City, with Rodrigo ensuring he remains an unmovable force in the defensive midfield slot following his astronomically high-standard performances last season.

Despite several opportunities to come into the squad during times of absence from Rodri, Kalvin Phillips has largely remained on the substitutes bench, and now Crystal Palace have emerged as one of several clubs to indicate an interest in recruiting his talents this month.

Speaking during an address with the media on Tuesday afternoon, Eagles boss Roy Hodgson stated that Kalvin Phillips would be an option the Selhurst Park club would be wanting to explore, should the right agreement become available to the side.

“I would like to think that if Kalvin Phillips is available and is a possibility for the club,” Hodgson explained. “Once again, there would be financial restrictions. Who knows whether the club feels that they can afford that, but if you’re talking about the level of player, I don’t think there would be many managers who would not say they would be really happy to have him come to the club.”

He continued, “But as far as I’m concerned, it’s a name that’s out there and of course we know, like most other clubs, there’s a possibility that Man City will either sell him or loan him. If they are purely going to sell him, then I wouldn’t think we would be in the market.

“If they are going to loan him, I would like to think that possibly we could put our hand up and push ourselves forward. And of course, what we could then offer is probably the chance of playing regular football in the Premiership in the build-up to what is going to be a very important summer for England and obviously for him.

“We might not be the only club in that position, so at the end of the day, a lot will have to happen I think before we find out what or where Kalvin Phillips is going to end up, if he’s going to go anywhere.”

Elsewhere, Newcastle United, West Ham, and Everton are understood to be other potential suitors for Phillips this month, however there is a belief in some quarters that for a move to come to fruition, Manchester City would have to reduce their financial demands.

It is widely believed that the Premier League champions are seeking a loan fee in the region of between £5 million and £7 million, while an obligation to make any loan deal permanent is also being discussed in various conversations.
