Man City youngster set to turn down January move after ‘discussions with Pep’

| Last Updated:

Manchester City full-back Sergio Gomez will reportedly remain at the club beyond the January window after a discussion with Pep Guardiola.

Gomez has found himself down in the pecking order this season, making just two Premier League appearances so far through the first half of the 2023/24 campaign, despite being the club’s only natural left-back.

The 23-year-old moved to the Etihad after one-year with Belgian side Anderlecht, but despite being labelled as a potential future first-teamer, Gomez finds himself as the number-three choice at left-back behind Josko Gvardiol and Nathan Ake.

Some reports suggested that the Spaniard will look for greener pastures in the January transfer window as he looks to get more playing-time during the back-half of the campaign.

However, a new report from Sports Witness has revealed that, after a discussion with City boss Pep Guardiola, Gomez is now more likely to remain at the Etihad for the remainder of the campaign.

Serie A giants AC Milan were said to be keen observers of Gomez ahead of the winter window, but Pep Guardiola appears to have convinced the player to remain a member of his squad going forward.

There is no indication of any promised game-time for the wide-man, but with City’s squad already thin, the fringe players could get called upon as the campaign ticks on towards the spring and the Blues fight on multiple fronts. Gomez remains under contract at Manchester City through 2026.

Meanwhile, City will turn their attention back to the Premier League this weekend as they travel north to St. James’s Park to square off with an injury-riddled Newcastle side.

Eddie Howe’s men have already tasted success against Manchester City this season, knocking the Blues out of the Carabao Cup in 1-0 win at St. James’s back in September. The Etihad outfit did get the better of the Magpies in the Premier League at home however.
