“We had a meeting” – Manchester City star reveals crunch Pep Guardiola talks

| Last Updated:

Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne has reminisced key talks with manager Pep Guardiola, detailing the relationship between the pair.

The 32-year-old, who recently returned to first-team training for the first time since August after undergoing surgery for a ruptured hamstring, has played 317 games under the management of Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

De Bruyne is the longest-serving member of the current Manchester City squad, having moved to the Etihad Stadium for £55 million in 2015 for a club-record fee.

The midfielder has made over 350 appearances for the Blues, playing an integral role in the club’s recent success; winning 14 trophies including five Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League.

De Bruyne has scored 96 goals for Manchester City and registered 102 Premier League assists, as well as winning a series of prestigious individual accolades.

Manchester City are hoping to have the Belgian available in the new year, with De Bruyne having not featured since the opening day of the Premier League campaign in August.

The 32-year-old is currently part of the Manchester City squad competing at the FIFA Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia, although the midfielder will not have any involvement in Friday’s Final against Fluminense after being omitted from the 23-man squad.

During De Bruyne’s period on the sidelines the star took part in a charity event at the Etihad Stadium, raising funds for City in the Community.

Speaking at ‘An Evening with Kevin De Bruyne’, the Belgium international detailed his relationship with Guardiola.

“Pep and me are fairly similar, mentality wise and the way we think about football. We don’t speak that often to each other but you know obviously he’s my boss so I have to listen to him!

“I think the first time that we had a conversation, I came later back from Euro 2016, we had a meeting and he said: ‘You can be a really, really good player, like top five in the world’, and I was like: ‘Wow, okay’. It gave me the confidence to go on.

“We have a really good relationship, sometimes he is really emotional about football, and I don’t think everybody sees that about him, but he loves the game, he loves the team, and the Club. It has been a really good ride.”
