Early team news: Julian Alvarez and Rico Lewis information ahead of Crvena zvezda vs Manchester City line-up confirmation

| Last Updated:

Julian Alvarez is set to be left out of Manchester City’s starting line-up to face Crvena zvezda in Belgrade on Wednesday evening, it has been reported ahead of kick-off.

Manchester City travel to the Serbian capital knowing that the result in Belgrade will have no impact on their position in their UEFA Champions League group, nor on their qualification status for the last-16.

Pep Guardiola’s side recorded a dramatic 3-2 comeback win over RB Leipzig on matchday five of the tournament, meaning they secured their place in the next round as well as top spot, whilst Wednesday’s opponents Crvena zvezda are guaranteed to finish bottom.

As such, Manchester City have a rare opportunity to rest and rotate their squad significantly this week, with a Premier League clash against Crystal Palace on the horizon, as well as their FIFA Club World Cup campaign in Saudi Arabia next week.

Pep Guardiola and his players were rewarded with a place at the world-renowned club competition through success in last season’s Champions League, and enter the tournament at the semi-final stage with the opportunity to win their fifth trophy of the calendar year.

Ahead of the confirmed line-ups from the Rajko Mitić Stadium in Belgrade this week, sources on social media have began releasing information around Pep Guardiola’s selection, with the first details offered by X user FPLToni.

It is claimed that Julian Alvarez will play no part in the contest in the Serbian capital, with the Argentina international being afforded much-needed rest by his manager as opposed to suffering from an injury concern or illness.

Elsewhere, it is highly likely that back-up goalkeeper Stefan Ortega Moreno will start in Belgrade in Manchester City’s final group stage game of the season, after Ederson was left out of the 23-man travelling squad due to illness.

In a further detail revealed by X user dis_fpl, Rico Lewis is also set to start for Pep Guardiola’s side, as expected following his exemplary performances in previous UEFA Champions League away games this season.

Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku, and Kevin De Bruyne will all miss out through respective injury problems and as such have not been named in the travelling squad, although the former is set to return to the club on Thursday for further assessment on his current fitness.

Sergio Gomez and Kalvin Phillips both start, whilst Phil Foden is not amongst the initial line-up according to X user FPL Brandon, whilst Oscar Bobb – according to X user Fpl Toni – lines up for Pep Guardiola.

Barak Bakhar and Pep Guardiola are expected to confirm their respective starting line-ups from 4:30 (UK) on Wednesday afternoon.

Now confirmed.
