Bayern Munich discuss potential move for Manchester City midfielder in January

Manchester City could command interest from Bayern Munich during the January transfer window, as uncertainty overshadows the future of one first-team player.
The two Premier League and Bundesliga champions are certainly no strangers when it comes to transfer business and negotiations with one another, having completed both loan and permanent deals over the last few seasons.
Leroy Sane brought an end to his illustrious stay at Manchester City in the summer of 2019 by moving back to the Bundesliga and joining Bayern Munich, where he continues to ply his trade to this day.
Most recently however, it was Joao Cancelo who left City for the Allianz Arena on a six-month loan deal during a difficult phase in his Etihad career, re-joining Pep Guardiola’s side this summer but leaving almost immediately for Barcelona on a season-long loan agreement.
Now there is the possibility for the two clubs to do business once again over a six-month loan deal, or perhaps something more permanent, with the German giants showing a level of interest in a player struggling for game-time at Manchester City.
That is according to the information of BILD’s Christian Falk, who reports this week that out-of-favour Manchester City defensive midfielder Kalvin Phillips is one of the candidates currently being ‘discussed’ at Bayern Munich ahead of the January transfer window.
Despite having only joined the club from Leeds United just over 12 months ago, Phillips could cut short his pursuit of a more stable place in Pep Guardiola’s first-team but seeking a temporary exit in the coming months.
Rodri continues to hold down the defensive midfield position for Pep Guardiola’s side, and despite the Spaniard having been on the end of a three-match suspension in the last few weeks, Kalvin Phillips was only called-upon in one of those fixtures.
The England international has been less than convincing in the games he has played, and there is serious concern over his confidence to perform to the required level under Pep Guardiola following a tumultuous start to life in the north-west of England.
Bayern Munich may offer the perfect escape for Kalvin Phillips, and the opportunity to rebuild confidence at one of Europe’s premier clubs before a possible return to Manchester City ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
