The PGMOL have now provided the full transcripts between the on-field match officials and video assistant referees during Manchester City’s 0-3 win over Burnley in matchweek 1 of the ongoing Premier League season.
While the result of the contest may have been a formality by the time of the incident, the decision to send off Burnley’s Anass Zaroury became a major talking point in the moments that followed.
Referee Craig Pawson had originally opted to issue a yellow card to the Burnley man, but following an on-field review, reversed his decision before upgrading the punishment to a straight red for serious foul play.
Now, as part of the discussion revealed on ‘Match Officials: Mic’d Up’ broadcast on Sky Sports and TNT Sports, as well as the Premier League’s social media channels, the full transcript involving match referee Craig Pawson and VAR Michael Oliver has been revealed, along with the voices from assistant referees and assistant video assistant referees on the night.
Full transcript as per ‘Match Officials: Mic’d Up’
AR1, Assistant Referee 1: “Foul, foul, foul.”
REF, Craig Pawson: “It’s going to be a yellow card.”
VAR, Michael Oliver: “Just checking the tackle Paws (Craig Pawson), just checking the tackle. Need a point of contact Mo, please.”
RO, Replay Operator: “Here’s your point of contact.”
AVAR, Stuart Burt: “Yellow card shown on-field, 19.”
VAR, Oliver: “We’ve got a straight leg there. Have you got a better angle?”
“I reckon that’s red mate. Straight leg, watch the studs.”
“Paws it’s Oli (Michael Oliver), I’m going to recommend an on-field review for a possible red card by Burnley number 19. Let me know when you get to the screen and I’ll show you the best angle.”
“That’s the angle I want to show him. So, I want to start at the point of contact and I want it on a loop, initially at full speed, sorry, initially at slow speed but then I need to show him at full speed.”
RO, Replay Operator: “Yeah, OK.”
VAR, Oliver: “When you get there Craig I’ll show you the first of all the point of contact.”
REF, Pawson: “Perfect mate.”
VAR, Oliver: “I’ll then show you at full speed and I’ll slow it down to show the contact again. So, this is this point of contact. And I’ll show you it now at full speed.”
“Run through it again and I can show you the contact again or I can show you in a different speed if you’d like that?”
REF, Pawson: “No, perfect. Just show me another angle from the side, I can see the contact on the back.”
“OK, so he catches him straight on the back of the leg.”
VAR, Oliver: “Yeah, the first angle’s the best one, the first angle’s the best one.”
REF, Pawson: “Red card for serious foul play mate, yeah?”
VAR, Oliver: “Burnley, 19”
REF, Pawson: “OK, Oli thank you.”
REF, Pawson to Burnley players: “Red card. Catches him straight on the back of the calf.”
PGMOL Chief Refereeing Officer, Howard Webb’s verdict
