Elliot Anderson starred in his first match as a Manchester City player, amid reports on Wednesday, as England progressed into the FIFA World Cup last-16 against Mexico.

Harry Kane single-handedly saved England from what would have been one of the most embarrassing collapses in World Cup history, striking twice late on to secure a tense 2-1 comeback win against DR Congo in Atlanta.

Thomas Tuchel’s side looked devoid of ideas and spent much of the match staring down the barrel of a shocking exit after Brian Cipenga gave the underdogs an early lead. The Three Lions rode their luck at times – particularly when Yoane Wissa struck the post on half-time – while a brilliant performance from Congolese goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi frustrated the favourites.

The match finally turned on its head in the 75th minute when the England captain rose highest to nod home a vital equaliser from substitute Anthony Gordon’s cross. With momentum shifted and just four minutes remaining, Kane proved his world-class credentials yet again by collecting the ball on the edge of the box and unleashing a ferocious right-footed shot into the top corner.

His fifth goal of the tournament not only spared England’s blushes but also punched their ticket to a highly anticipated round-of-16 blockbuster against co-hosts Mexico at the iconic Azteca Stadium on Monday, July 6.
