Ilkay Gundogan has expressed his thoughts on Manchester City retaining their Premier League once again following Arsenal’s defeat to Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Pep Guardiola’s men have been crowned the English champions for the third year running after coming out on top of what has been a truly entertaining title race.

Arsenal led the league table for an overwhelming majority of the campaign but a sensational run of form born in February helped City pip Mikel Arteta’s Gunners and retain their title.

Having led the Blues to a fifth league title in six seasons under Guardiola, Ilkay Gundogan hailed his side’s achievement as ‘something special’ as he prepares to lift the Premier League trophy after City face Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

“To have helped Manchester City win a third straight Premier League title is something very special,” the German said.

“The Premier League is without doubt the most demanding and competitive league in the world so that tells you everything about what an achievement this is.”

City remain on course to pull off a historic treble this season ahead of FA Cup and Champions League finals against Manchester United and Inter Milan respectively in the coming weeks.

The club captain added: “This squad is so talented and so special and to have been captain this season has been an enormous privilege. I would also like to thank Pep (Guardiola), all the backroom staff and everyone who works across this football club.

“Everyday, they help provide us with everything we need in order to try to be successful. There’s no way we could’ve won this title without all their support. To have won this trophy three times in a row and five times in six years is incredible.”
