Throughout the course of the club’s long-standing and glistening history, Manchester City have won the FA Cup a total of seven times.

During their ongoing golden era, they have picked up three titles, in addition to making the final on three other occasions. Now, their route back to Wembley Stadium has begun in the wake of the third round draw.

Pep Guardiola’s men will be going head-to-head with Exeter City in January and while the overwhelming expectation is that they run away with a win, you can never be too careful in this competition.

With that being said, the FA Cup – and domestic cups in a general sense – have been pretty kind to the boys from the Etihad Stadium, which is why we thought it would be beneficial to take a look back at the recent history of Manchester City in this competition.

2024/2025

Last season, Manchester City had a pretty favourable route to the final as they tore through Salford City, Leyton Orient, Plymouth Argyle, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest to make it to the big dance.

However, in the final, they fell short in a 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace. If you fancy them to go one better in May, with the club currently priced at 9/2, you can use this betting odds calculator to see how much you could stand to earn.

2023/2024

The year prior in 2023/24, it was certainly a more difficult path with three top clubs for Manchester City to overcome en-route to the final.

They beat Huddersfield Town, Tottenham Hotspur, Luton Town, Newcastle United, and Chelsea before arriving at yet another meeting with rivals Manchester United which – against all odds – they managed to lose 2-1.

2022/2023

That served as revenge for the red half of Manchester because 12 months prior, Manchester City beat United 2-1 in the final as part of their historic treble-winning campaign.

They also had to go through Chelsea, Arsenal, Bristol City, Burnley and Sheffield United in order to book their ticket.

2021/2022

In 2021/22, they beat Swindon Town, Fulham, Peterborough United and Southampton to ensure they once again reached the semi-final stage, but a dramatic showdown with Liverpool ended in a 2-1 defeat.

The semi-finals were their downfall in 2020/21, too, as they lost 1-0 to Chelsea in front of an empty Wembley Stadium after initially managing to beat Birmingham, Cheltenham, Swansea City and Everton.

Will Pep Guardiola focus on the FA Cup?

Given that silverware was sparse for Manchester City last season, you would have to imagine that they will put a lot of focus on the FA Cup this year.

Pep Guardiola knows that Arsenal are the frontrunners in the league and that Europe is as unpredictable as ever, meaning that the cups, as they have been so often in the past, present them with an opportunity for redemption.

The core ‘winning’ mentality within this squad still very much exists and nobody can dispute that. Still, when you become so familiar with the sensation of winning and picking up trophy after trophy, even the shortest drought can feel like an eternity.

Regardless of who they come up against, they will rightfully be viewed as the favourites to go all the way once again.
