It’s time for the big one as Manchester City take on Real Madrid in the first-leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final.

From Madrid, to Merseyside, and back to Manchester, it’s the start of a season-defining eight days for City, with their away tie against Real Madrid the first of three mightily important fixtures.

The Champions League has eluded Manchester City for years, and while picking up every other trophy available during Pep Guardiola’s tenure, success in Europe has always been the one Achilles heel for the club.

It appears as though their chances are the highest they have been this season however, with the Blues in simply spectacular form, breaking records and making history on numerous occasions this season.

Erling Haaland has spearheaded this period of dominance for the blues, with the forward at the forefront of a ruthless Manchester City attack who tend to blow opposition out of the water with ease.

The Norwegian striker has scored the most goals in a single Premier League campaign (35) in what is his debut season, emphasising the sheer quality that the Champions possess up front.

However, despite the quality at the hands of Pep Guardiola, the Spaniard will be astutely aware of the superstars his counterpart Carlo Ancelotti has, with last season’s heartbreak the perfect reminder.

A last-minute comeback by Real Madrid ended Manchester City’s hopes of European success last season, but Pep Guardiola has been vocal that this isn’t a chance for revenge on Tuesday night. The Catalan coach stated during his pre-match press conference, “It would be a huge mistake to think we are here for revenge, just another opportunity.”

Despite the bitter taste left in the mouths of the players on this ground last year, there will be no room for emotion on Tuesday night, with Real Madrid being the masters at seeking out any form of weakness.

An injury to Nathan Ake and a suspension to Eder Militao means both sides are defensively deprived, but that simply will not diminish the quality on the pitch for both sides, as two of the best squads in Europe go head-to-head.

It will be interesting to see the mentality of both sides, with the first-leg this time coming at the Santiago Bernabeu. Manchester City had chances to kill the tie in the first leg last year, but simply failed – a feat which would be costly for the blues.

After seeing off Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of the competition, the momentum should be with Manchester City – who put in a monstrous display in both Manchester and Munich, sweeping the German giants aside.

No side will make it easy for the other, as the Champions of Spain host the Champions of England in a blockbuster fixture in Europe, with what promises to be an all-time Champions League classic.

Whether it is the young promise of Erling Haaland or the experienced wisdom of Karim Benzema to be the difference maker, an exhilarating game lies ahead as Real Madrid host Manchester City in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final.
