Manchester City extended their lead at the top of the Premier League with a vital 2-1 win over Leeds United on Saturday afternoon.

The Etihad Stadium was buoyant as the Premier League champions were presented with another chance to land a hammer blow of title challengers Arsenal, who face a tricky test away to Newcastle this weekend.

Pep Guardiola’s side began the game in dominant fashion with several early opportunities falling to the hosts.

City took an early lead through captain Ilkay Gundogan, who saw his low-driven effort from the edge of the box beat Joel Robles in the Leeds goal.

The Germany international received the ball from Riyad Mahrez on the right wing and cut through the away side’s defence like a hot knife through butter.

City almost doubled their lead as Kevin De Bruyne set up Erling Haaland exquisitely, but the Norwegian narrowly missed the target – much to the crowd’s surprise.

However, it did not take long for the Blues to extend their advantage as on the stroke of the half-hour mark, City executed a carbon copy of their opener to give themselves some breathing room.

Gundogan once again slotted home from the edge of the box to round off a brilliant team move, with Mahrez once again setting up the 32-year-old to slot home.

City went close again through Haaland and Phil Foden but none of the attacking duo could add to the lead, with Guardiola’s side entering the interval with a two-goal lead.

The home side kicked off the second half on the front foot, with Haaland’s powerful header striking the crossbar in a move that was ultimately adjudged to be offside.

Haaland had another good chance to open his account for the day shortly after when Julian Alvarez picked out the Leeds-born forward with an inviting cross – but the effort was directed straight at the keeper.

Nathan Ake was then taken off after what appeared to be an injury concern for the in-form Dutchman as Kyle Walker replaced the former Chelsea man after 54 minutes.

Almost unbelievably, Haaland then missed another golden opportunity by shooting wide after turning smartly on the edge of the box.

City continued to plug away but had no luck in finding a third goal as the match lazily grounded to a anti-climactic halt.

Then all of a sudden, a chance to do so was gifted to City on a silver platter as Foden was brought down by Pascal Struijk in the box and Guardiola’s men were awarded a penalty.

Sentimentality shone through as usual taker Haaland, who allowed Gundogan a golden chance to net a hat-trick but the Manchester City skipper fired his effort against the post.

Things heated up following the disastrous miss as Rodrigo surprisingly pulled back a goal for Leeds after a poor touch by Manuel Akanji.

Guardiola had seen enough at this point, deciding to bring off Alvarez for Bernardo Silva in an attempt to see the game through.

Shortly after goalscorer Gundogan was taken off for Rodri, City continued to do all they could to run down the clock and claim a vital win. Despite the scares, the Citizens held on to claim a major win in the ever-engaging title race.

As a result, City find themselves top of the Premier League table by four points with Arsenal taking on Newcastle on Sunday afternoon.

Guardiola’s side are next in action on Tuesday evening as they travel to the Santiago Bernabéu for the opening leg of their much-awaited Champions League semi-final tie against Real Madrid.
