Two Manchester City stars were subject to immense praise from Pep Guardiola after the 3-0 win over Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

The victory, which marked Guardiola’s 1,000th game in management, was one of City’s most commanding performances of the season so far, dismantling the reigning Premier League champions with control, precision, and tactical brilliance.

Erling Haaland’s towering header opened the scoring after the Norwegian had earlier missed from the penalty spot, before a deflected strike from Nico Gonzalez and a stunning solo effort from Jeremy Doku wrapped up a memorable afternoon at the Etihad Stadium.

City dictated tempo from the first whistle, starving Liverpool of the ball while exploiting spaces between full-backs and midfield. Gianluigi Donnarumma’s assured handling, coupled with the composure of City’s defensive structure, blunted a Liverpool attack that had previously looked reinvigorated under Arne Slot.

Among those praised most highly post-match was 20-year-old Nico O’Reilly, who continues to establish himself as one of the most reliable young figures in Pep Guardiola’s set-up. The academy graduate was once again deployed at left-back, tasked with the unenviable role of handling Mohamed Salah, and did so with maturity beyond his years.

On the other end of the age and experience spectrum, Manchester City captain Bernardo Silva also received glowing recognition from his manager, whose emotional comments highlighted the Portuguese playmaker’s leadership and resilience during a demanding period.

“He [Salah] has been a nightmare for many years. Always he’s punished us, his speed,” Guardiola said of Egyptian international, Mo Salah. “And I said, ‘You [Nico O’Reilly] have to be aggressive’, being helped every time Mo had the ball, two or three players close.”

Guardiola continued, “And Jeremy [Doku], Bernardo [Silva], Phil [Foden] were close to not leave him one-against-one. It was an incredible team battle and defensively really, really good, especially in the first-half.

“But Nico made a step up, you have to prove against the best wingers how you behave, perform, and there is no better example than facing Salah, and handling it really good!”

Another name crucial to the efforts that overcame Arne Slot’s side was City’s captain and long-standing central midfield star Bernardo Silva. Despite his ageing profile, the Portuguese international remains vital to everything the Sky Blues do in the middle of the pitch.

“Bernie was struggling last season, but was there; EVERY. SINGLE. GAME. Exhausted! After 50, 60 minutes he couldn’t run one minute, and in moments said, ‘Pep, I’m drained. My mind isn’t anymore. It’s defeat, defeat, defeat’. But he was there!” said Guardiola on the Portuguese star.

He continued, “And I said many times, that will not be forgotten. And [Ilkay] Gundo was there, many players were there, and that’s why he’s my captain. Because in bad moments he proved… He has been an incredible signing for us. And in the way we played today, he’s a master.

“The tempo, wanting the ball, accelerate, decelerate, intuition of where is the space to press or not, how to manage situations, many things. He’s one of the most clever players I’ve ever met in my period as a manager.”

The result pushed Manchester City within four points of league leaders Arsenal and sent a clear reminder of their quality after an inconsistent autumn run. For Pep Guardiola, it was as much about the collective spirit as the tactical execution.

As the campaign moves deeper into its traditionally congested winter period, Manchester City’s reliance on players such as Bernardo Silva – both for his intelligence and emotional influence – will only grow.

The Catalan’s public praise for his captain suggests a renewed sense of unity within the dressing room, while Nico O’Reilly’s rapid rise continues to underline the success of Manchester City’s academy integration.
