Manchester City’s £31 million summer signing open to loan exit in January
Manchester City could yet see one of their poster signings of the recent summer transfer window assess the idea of a loan exit in the new year, it is being claimed.
The Etihad Stadium side made a major statement in the summer by signing Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain in a deal that immediately reshaped the goalkeeper hierarchy under Pep Guardiola.
For James Trafford, who had also committed to a switch into Manchester during the summer after a strong spell with Burnley, the timing could not have been more challenging for the young England international.
Trafford was expected to be a long-term successor in goal for Manchester City, particularly after impressing at Turf Moor and with Ederson widely tipped to leave in the near future, ultimately joining Fenerbahce on deadline day.
However, the arrival of a 26-year-old Gianluigi Donnarumma in his prime has created fierce competition for the No.1 shirt at Manchester City, raising big questions over James Trafford’s immediate pathway.
With Stefan Ortega also still in the squad, Pep Guardiola now has three senior goalkeepers vying for minutes in all competitions, in addition to veteran stopper Marcus Bettinelli – signed from Chelsea prior to the FIFA Club World Cup earlier this year.
Manchester City’s upcoming schedule, including UEFA Champions League and domestic cup commitments, may offer James Trafford opportunities, but regular Premier League football could be limited as Pep Guardiola leans on experience in high-pressure games.
According to TBR Football, Trafford will be open to a loan move away from Manchester City in the upcoming January transfer window in order to preserve his dreams of a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Following the signing of Gianluigi Donnarumma, it is claimed that City are aware of impending issues with Trafford and have been told the situation will be looked at in the coming months, understanding the player’s potential frustrations.
Having been named in Thomas Tuchel’s most-recent England squad off the back of successive starts in Manchester City’s opening three Premier League matches, the chances of Trafford remaining in the Three Lions’ party without first-team football are ‘highly unlikely’.
If a loan is sanctioned, Manchester City are expected to consider only those clubs capable of offering James Trafford a guaranteed No.1 role. A move abroad could be an option, particularly to a league that would test his distribution and composure in possession.
For now, Trafford’s focus will remain on competing with Donnarumma, but January could bring a decision. Should England insist on regular game time as a condition for international inclusion, both the player and club may see a temporary switch as the best solution.
With the 2026 World Cup looming large on the horizon in North America, James Trafford’s development and minutes will be under close scrutiny – both by Pep Guardiola at Manchester City and by Thomas Tuchel with England.
