‘Everything is ready’ – Positive update on Manchester City’s chase of Florian Wirtz amid Liverpool competition
Manchester City fans may have just been handed fresh optimism after a chaotic few days concerning the ongoing chase of Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz.
German media had been insistent on their line of reporting that Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich had struck a verbal agreement with the club over a transfer to the Allianz Arena either this summer, or in 2026.
Much of that confidence was then reduced when it emerged on Tuesday that Wirtz, alongside his parents, had made a trip to the North-West of England to meet with officials from both Manchester City and Liverpool.
In the case of the Etihad Stadium club, one report suggested that Wirtz had taken a tour of the City Football Academy facilities, whilst also holding communication with ‘key figures’ within the Manchester City operation.
After it was later confirmed that Liverpool had registered their interest in Wirtz this summer, should the player be open to the idea of a move to English football, some reports in Germany began to signal that the Anfield project had leapfrogged City in the midfielder’s thinking.
Now, according to a new update from journalist Sacha Tavolieri, it has been clarified that Manchester City have always been the English club ‘more close’ to signing Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz.
For now, the report states that it is a matter of the 22-year-old attacking midfielder alongside his family deciding their next steps in the game, although ‘everything is ready’ on Manchester City’s side in the event of a positive answer for them.
While that thought process remains ongoing from the side of the Wirtz camp, Manchester City are expected to be maintaining their hunt for other recruits in separate areas of Pep Guardiola’s playing squad ahead of the new season.
There is believed to be an intense hunt for the signature of Tijjani Reijnders at AC Milan, with the 26-year-old Dutchman seen as a strong profile to step into City’s ‘No.8’ role that has long been handled by the likes of Ilkay Gundogan and Mateo Kovacic this season.
While full-back may also be addressed in the coming weeks, much of the excitement and media reports centre around the midfield, with the subject of Morgan Gibbs-White and admiration from the Etihad expected to intensify soon.
