Match Preview: RB Leipzig vs Manchester City (Champions League Last-16 First-Leg)

On Wednesday night, Manchester City resume their European journey in the Champions League with the first-leg of their last-16 match-up against Bundesliga giants RB Leipzig.

Last time out, City took on Nottingham Forest in a match that saw Pep Guardiola’s side take home just one point, rather than the anticipated three that would help them keep level with Arsenal at the top of the table.

After several chances in the first-half, Bernardo Silva sent a sublime long-range effort past the gloves of recently-acquired goalkeeper Keylor Navas, giving Manchester City the lead following a dominant opening 45 minutes.

This single-goal lead would last for most of the second-half, largely thanks to several squandered opportunities from the hosts, until Morgan Gibbs-White crossed a ball for Chris Wood to tap home and bring the game level.

Next up is RB Leipzig in the UEFA Champions League, who come into the first-leg of the last-16 tie off the back of a 3-0 victory over VFL Wolfsburg, courtesy of goals from Emil Forsberg, Konrad Laimer, and Dominik Szoboszlai.

Manchester City advanced into the round of 16 stage after topping a group featuring Borussia Dortmund, FC Copenhagen, and Sevilla – drawing just two of their six allocated matches prior to the break for the FIFA World Cup.

A win away on Wednesday night would give Manchester City a significant edge going into the second-leg which will be played at the Etihad Stadium.
