Manchester City could count themselves out of the race for the Premier League title as soon as this Sunday, according to former club captain Ilkay Gundogan.

The reigning champions find themselves on a run of six matches without a win, and having lost all of their last three matches in the English top-flight, meaning that defeat on Sunday could leave them 11 points adrift of the division’s summit.

Manchester City’s shock 0-4 home defeat to Tottenham on Saturday evening was originally followed up by a three-goal lead with 15 minutes remaining against Feyenoord in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night.

However, a calamitous closing exchange at the Etihad Stadium saw the Dutch giants come back and draw the contest 3-3, leaving Manchester City in 15th position prior to the second-half of matches on matchday five of the competition’s league phase.

Speaking after Manchester City’s dramatic 3-3 draw to Feyenoord, Ilkay Gundogan admitted that defeat to Liverpool on Sunday afternoon could signal the end of their Premier League title pursuit.

Quizzed on whether the trip to Anfield is a must-win for the reigning Premier League champions, Gundogan said, “To stay in the title race probably yes, because 11 points would be a huge gap.”

The German midfielder continued, “Anfield is always tough, no matter the situation. We’ve struggled in recent years going there. We know Liverpool are a great team full of confidence right now.

“It’s going to be as tough as it is possible to be. But that sums up the situation right now.”

It is now over a month since Manchester City last one a contest in any competition, with that victory coming in a narrow 1-0 win over Southampton back in October thanks to a single Erling Haaland goal in the 5th minute of that contest.
