Following Manchester City’s 3-3 draw with Feyenoord in the UEFA Champions League, Pep Guardiola took a moment to address the reaction from supporters.

Despite yet another disappointing result, which left the team with mixed emotions after squandering a lead, Guardiola was quick to praise the loyalty and unwavering support of the fans, even though some expressed frustration through boos upon the full-time whistle.

Manchester City’s Champions League campaign has certainly had its ups and downs, and the 3-3 draw against Feyenoord was a particularly frustrating affair following on from a 4-1 loss away to Sporting in Lisbon on matchday three.

After taking the lead and going three goals clear in the game by the 75th minute, three goals in response from the visitors would follow, leaving home fans disappointed with the outcome in a week that has also seen them lose a fifth straight match across competitions.

However, despite their clear frustrations at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night, the City supporters continued to show their support throughout the game and will almost certainly stick by the team and its manager in what will be a challenging few weeks ahead.

“Against Tottenham with 0-4, they were there supporting us, they applaud. Of course they are disappointed, of course we understand. People come here not to remember success in the past, they come today to see the team win and perform well,” Guardiola explained after the game.

Pep Guardiola acknowledged the fans’ understandable disappointment but also emphasised that their commitment to supporting the team, both in good times and bad, remains strong.

“We are not the only ones, I am not the only one who when the situation is bad or good, they support us all the time. When we go away, our fans are amazing, the travel, and it’s nothing to do, of course they are completely right to express what they feel. Absolutely,” he said.

The relationship between Pep Guardiola, his players, and the Manchester City supporters has been a defining feature of the club’s success in recent years, culminating in a Treble triumph in 2023 and a fourth consecutive Premier League crown one year later.

Even in moments of frustration, such as the draw with Feyenoord and the five defeats in a row prior to the meeting with the Eredivisie side this week, the team’s connection with its fans remains strong.

As the team prepares for the final stages of the UEFA Champions League league phase, and a showdown with Liverpool in the Premier League at Anfield on Sunday afternoon, Pep Guardiola’s words serve as a reminder of the crucial role that supporters play.
