Pep Guardiola has pointed out that while many clubs can match their four defeats in a row across competitions, Manchester City are the only side able to do one other thing.

The Premier League champions are returning to action this weekend as Manchester City welcome Tottenham to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday evening, in an attempt to ensure they remain within touching distance of league leaders Liverpool.

Things have been far from straight forward for Pep Guardiola and his players in recent matches, with the club battling fitness and injury problems and as such paying the ultimate price against Bournemouth and Brighton in successive defeats.

With a number of key names recovering from injury and building up their own match fitness and sharpness during the international break, Manchester City will be hoping that their fortunes can turn around almost immediately.

That starts with the visit of Ange Postecoglou’s side, but the record of four defeats in their last four matches does not appear to be affecting Pep Guardiola’s confidence in his own sides’ performances and possibilities this season.

Speaking during his pre-match press conference ahead of Manchester City’s return to action against Tottenham in the Premier League this weekend, Pep Guardiola made a clear point with regards to the club’s four defeats in a row across competitions.

“You are able to lose four games in a row. At the same time, you are able to win four Premier Leagues in a row,” Guardiola pointed out, before insisting on the one clear difference between those two possibilities.

“But the difference is sometimes most of the teams are able to lose four games in a row in different competitions, but just one team won four Premier Leagues in a row,” he stated. “So this happens.”

Manchester City’s record of becoming the first side in the history of English football to win four top-flight titles in a row last season followed up the historic achievement of winning the traditional Treble the season prior.

Pep Guardiola and his players continue to set new highs within the game, and particularly within the English game, and the club’s competitors will no doubt be dreading the future as the Catalan coach extended his contractual stay with the club until the summer of 2027.
