Daniel Siebert to referee UEFA Champions League clash between Sporting CP and Manchester City in League Phase clash
An all-German team of match officials led by Daniel Siebert will oversee proceedings on matchday four of Manchester City’s Champions League campaign on Tuesday night.
After consecutive defeats across competitions over the last two matches, Manchester City will have no greater incentive for victory this week as they look to further solidify their position in the automatic qualification places for the UEFA Champions League last-16.
Last time out in Europe, Pep Guardiola’s players comfortably dismissed of Sparta Prague at the Etihad via a five-goal margin, with goals from Phil Foden, a brace from Erling Haaland, another strike from John Stones, and a Matheus Nunes penalty sealing the three points.
However, the last two matches have brought less joy both in terms of goalscoring and the results themselves, with an exit in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup at the hands of Tottenham followed by a 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth in the Premier League.
Ahead of the meeting between Sporting CP and Manchester City, the UEFA Champions League have now announced the list of match officials to oversee proceedings at Estádio José Alvalade!
Match Referee
UEFA have confirmed this week that 40-year-old official Daniel Siebert will oversee proceedings from the centre of the pitch in the Portuguese capital this week as he takes on the role of match referee between Sporting and Manchester City.
The Berlin-born referee will be taking charge of his second UEFA Champions League game of the season, having previously policed Paris Saint-Germain’s narrow 1-0 win over Girona in September, issuing four yellow cards on the evening.
Manchester City have come across Siebert as their match referee on just one previous occasion but with that fixture being the dramatic and hotly-contested 0-0 draw away to Atletico Madrid in the Spanish capital.
With the contest marred by on-field confrontations and heated battles involving the likes of Stefan Savic and Jack Grealish, Siebert issued a total of 10 yellow cards including one for manager Diego Simeone, and a second yellow for Felipe.
Assistant Referees
Supporting Daniel Siebert from the roles of assistant referees at the home of Sporting CP this week will be German pairing Jan Seidel and Rafael Foltyn.
Video Assistant Referees
Officiating the contest from the VAR centre for Tuesday night’s affair will also be a German duo, as Bastian Dankert is appointed to the role of Video Assistant Referee, with Benjamin Brand as the Assistant Video Assistant Referee on the night.
Fourth Official
Standing between the two dugouts and ensuring that Ruben Amorim and Pep Guardiola’s benches are on the best behaviour, whilst completing the all-German team of match officials, will be Daniel Schlager as fourth official.
