Numerous sources around Manchester City have issued an update on reported interest in Sporting CP’s Ruben Amorim becoming the successor to Pep Guardiola.

The Portugal international emerged as a potential candidate to replace the aforementioned Catalan tactician when the 53-year-old ultimately brings an end to his illustrious time in charge of the four-time successive Premier League champions.

Manchester City maintain their stance of wanting Guardiola to extend his stay into a 10th season at the Etihad Stadium, but remain respectful of his achievements by allowing the coach to make a decision in his own time.

Meanwhile, the club will no doubt be monitoring the developments, success, and playing styles being implemented across Europe by coaches who may align themselves with the vision that Manchester City will want to carry forward into the future.

But one name previously linked with interest from the Etihad Stadium following confirmation of their next Director of Football being Sporting’s Hugo Viana has seemingly been ruled out of contention, and not due to advances from the club’s city rivals.

According to BBC Sport’s Mike Minay, interest from Manchester City in Sporting head coach Ruben Amorim was ‘pure speculation’ with current manager Pep Guardiola still in charge at the Etihad Stadium.

It is further explained that there are ‘concerns’ that the 39-year-old Portuguese coach’s system is not in keeping with Manchester City’s existing style of play and despite the obvious link to incoming Director of Football, Hugo Viana there is no further substance to links.

Additional reporting from MailSport’s Jack Gaughan insists that Ruben Amorim has not been among the names Manchester City have looked at as a potential new manager beyond Pep Guardiola’s stay at the club.

It is stressed there was a belief in Portugal that Amorim and Viana would link back up in England after the latter agreed to become the successor to Txiki Begiristain, while the preferable next coach at the Etihad would align to Guardiola and Begiristain’s style of play.

Reports on Monday, in the aftermath of Erik ten Hag’s sacking as Manchester United manager, revealed that Ruben Amorim had agreed in principle to become the next manager at Old Trafford.

It was further claimed, as per the Manchester Evening News, that officials from United and Sporting were in negotiations over a compensation package with the likes of Omar Berrada and Dan Ashworth wanting to move their club into a new direction as soon as possible.

For Manchester City, the Premier League champions will likely be more focussed on the future of current Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso, who has experienced the ultimate success in German football to date by claiming the Bundesliga crown last season.
