Rodri admits ‘realisation of a dream’ by becoming 2024 Ballon d’Or winner
Manchester City and Spain’s Rodri has admitted that winning the 2024 Ballon d’Or is the “realisation of a dream” for him in his top-level football career.
The 28-year-old became the first player in the history of the reigning Premier League champions to claim the Ballon d’Or on a memorable and historic evening for both the midfielder and the Etihad Stadium organisation.
Alongside his personal success, Rodri also made history by becoming the first defensive midfielder to win the Ballon d’Or since Lothar Matthaus in 1990, in a true testament to the outstanding capabilities of the Spaniard.
Speaking after winning the latest edition of the prestigious football honour in the French capital of Paris on Tuesday night, Rodri told those in attendance, “Winning the Ballon d’Or is the realisation of a dream and a genuine honour for me.
“I’ve given so much to football, and to be rewarded with the most revered individual prize in the game is something incredibly special for me and my family. However, individual prizes are so often the result of strong team performances – I’m eternally grateful to Manchester City.”
The 28-year-old continued, “My teammates are the best – I couldn’t ask for more, personally and professionally – and the support I receive across every department means I’m given opportunity to focus on my football and perform at my very best. I’m very fortunate to be able call myself a Manchester City player.
“I also want to thank my family for their constant love and support. My career would not have been possible without them. I am humbled, honoured and very proud tonight. My focus now is returning to full fitness and pulling on a City shirt again.”
Rodri celebrated his success deep into the night with a delegation from Manchester City, as well as teammates Ruben Dias and Savinho – both of whom were present at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris.
It remains to be seen whether Rodri will return to Manchester alongside his girlfriend, family, and Manchester City’s team to celebrate and mark his success at the Etihad Stadium and City Football Academy.
There will not be an opportunity to present the Ballon d’Or to the Etihad Stadium until after the international break in November however, with Pep Guardiola’s side now facing four consecutive away matches.
